I was born in the once busy industrial town of Prestonpans to miner Jim Kerr and his hard working wife Elizabeth, or Leebie, as she was known.
The year was 1942 when I came unexpectedly into the world weighing little more than a bag of sugar. My mother was warned that I had only a slim chance of survival. Who were they kidding! Now at the age of 67 years of age I am still surprising every one.
At the age of 3yrs. I used to go
in and out of the school classrooms as I pleased. My parents house in
Kirk Street faced on to the school
gates
so the playground was my front yard (or so I thought.)
When the time came to officially start my education I wasn’t keen at all as I thought I had enough schooling, but kicking and screaming I was led into my first class. There were French windows that opened out into the playing field but despite the heat that summer, they had to be kept closed as I escaped at every chance I could. I suppose that is why I left at 15, something I was to regret later on in life; but would I listen?
I started my working life in the editorial department of Wm. MacDonald and Co., Directory Press, in Edinburgh and found it to be the most boring job I ever did. My co-workers were old women who spent their day tutting and nose blowing and constantly telling me to wheesht.
That was enough for me and my high spirits so I duly left and started work behind the counter of my local grocery store where I came into my own. I just loved working there and realized that working with the public was what I did best.
Over the years I have had various jobs but being made redundant from Charles Letts & Co I found a complete change working as a sales representative for Bemrose Calenders and Diaries where I went on to be an asset to the company.
Working for many years as a sales representative and sales
trainer, I sadly had to leave as my mother’s health took a turn
for the worst and as my father needed my help, I took up the position
managing the local
Co-op Footwear store until I retired due to my own ill health.
It was during that time I started to write my first novel ‘Three
Sons,’ which was published April 07.
The second Novel ‘House of Lies’ is now available and can be purchased online at Amazon or is available at Waterstone’s in Edinburgh and Glasgow. It is also available from Kesley’s Books, Haddington.
This is a story rich in Scottish dialogue as the tale of Mary Sweeny and her three sons enfolded. Set in the mining town of Prestonpans, things were hard for many families ...
