House of Lies

'House of Lies' tells the compelling story of Sally Baxter. A difficult childhood dominated by her abusive mother Nellie, forces Sally to bring herself and her siblings up under her mothers critical eye. Her father Tom Baxter, whom she adores, seems powerless to take on his feisty wife who is not only strong willed and bad tempered, but enjoys a drink and the attention of other men. In between her mother’s onslaughts, Sally attempts to lead as normal a life as possible, but conditions in the harsh coal-mining town of Prestonpans and the attentions of two undesirable brothers push her over the edge.

Somehow, Sally manages to experience happier times whilst spent at a children's home where the matron becomes a strong role model. The good habits learned whilst under her tutelage set Sally up to succeed.

On returning home her nightmare continues when she is attacked and raped by the Watson brothers who come from a wealthy family. Terrified her father would seek revenge and be imprisoned she decided to keep the incident a secret.

Meanwhile Nellie has given birth to a son, the result of a dangerous liaison.

Later Sally has to attend hospital were a full examination is necessary. It then comes to light that she has been abused and immediately her father becomes a suspect. This forces Sally to invent a fictitious assailant; as a result she described a stranger who had forced his way into her mother’s house some time in the past, unaware the man she described had been her mother’s lover; the man who had fathered Nellie’s red headed baby.

This leads Tom on a mission, one with fatal consequences.

Sally’s life takes a turn for the better when she leaves home to stay with a childless couple who treat her like she was their own.

The start of Sally’s working life was exciting but a lecherous boss forces her to leave.
She then takes a job in a builder’s office where she meets and falls in love with Harry Penman, a handsome sales representative who she later finds out is the son of a very wealthy family who own a brewery.

When Sally’s odious sister Bess hears about Sally’s wealthy boyfriend she sets about blackmailing her. This leads to the break up of Sally’s romance as Libby Penman exposes what she has been told to her son.

Things in Sally’s life take a turn for the better when she becomes a director in the building company where she works. She at long last sees a way to get back at the Watson brothers, the two that had raped her years ago. They caused her to lie to spare her father but that lie had taken his life.
